Boost for Oaks Academy

Oaks Academy has received a vote of confidence from the Department for Education. Oaks Academy Trust only came in to being in April, covering Banstead Infant School and Warren Mead Primary School, but now it has been upgraded to Sponsor status – meaning it has done so well that it will be asked to take over and rapidly improve struggling primary schools.

News of the success, after a rigorous vetting process, came just as the autumn term was about to start, and coincided with revised guidance to school inspectors on what Oftsed expects schools to achieve. “Our stated purpose is to bring outstanding education to many more children,” said Gill Harradine, Executive Head Teacher of Oaks, “and this accolade confirms that we are ready to do just that.”

“Education professionals from the Department probed over a number of weeks to check that we have the capacity to take on more schools without undermining the progress being made at our
existing two. We were able to demonstrate that each has its own top-class leadership, and that our small central team will be able to devote the necessary time and expertise to helping others.”

“The fact that over a number of years prior to becoming an academy we have helped to turn round a number of failing schools stood us in good stead when we applied to become a Sponsor Academy. Now, instead of working with a school for a year or so and moving on, we will bring it in to our group and offer long-term career opportunities to teachers and school leaders as well as providing much better foundations for children in their secondary schools and indeed throughout their lives.”

“We’re excited by the opportunities our enhanced status brings for everyone associated with Oaks, and hope that this very public approval from the Department will also encourage schools that are not in trouble but do want to join in helping others might also want to become a part of the Oaks grouping.”
